HC Deb 09 February 1970 vol 795 cc279-80W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what factors caused the decline to the lowest

for travel to the Continent for purposes other than breeding. According to these figures no pigs were exported for purposes other than breeding in 1967 and 1968. In 1969 about 17,600 pigs were exported for immediate slaughter and about 53,600 for further fattening.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many pigs were exported for slaughter in the last quarter of 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969, respectively.

Mr. Mackie

The number of live pigs exported in the last quarter of 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969 respectively, was:

level since 1953 of the per capita consumption of fresh meat in the third quarter of 1969.

Mr. Mackie

The consumption of carcase meat is affected by the supplies available, the relative cost of competing products and changes in consumer preference. The National Food Survey shows that the total of carcase meat, other meat and meat products obtained for household consumption has increased from an average of 32.34 oz. per person per week in 1953 to 37.40 oz. in the third quarter of 1969. The main change has been an increase in the consumption of poultry.
