asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proportion of the cost of repatriation of distressed British subjects at the public expense has remained un- recovered at the end of each of the past five years.

Mr. Luard

Amounts unrecovered in 1964–65, 1965–66, 1966–67, 1967–68 and 1968–69 totalled 10 per cent., 11 per cent., 26 per cent., 26 per cent. and 37 per cent., respectively, of expenditure in those years. Figures in respect of persons evacuated under emergency conditions are kept separately and as a cumulative total; unrecovered amounts stand at 40 per cent. over the period.
