HC Deb 06 February 1970 vol 795 c203W
Mr. Derek Page

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether the recent increases in the prices of Unilever's margarine and fats were approved by his Department under the early warning arrangements; and what reasons were given to him for these increases.

Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

No. Unilever notified my Department under the early warning arrangements of proposed increases in the prices of its margarines and compound cooking fats. It was informed that a decision could not be reached until further information had been provided. After the early warning period had elapsed, the firm, owing to a misunderstanding, raised its prices before supplying additional information. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity and I have, however, now asked the National Board for Prices and Incomes to consider the trends of costs, prices and profitability in the margarine and compound cooking fats industry.
