Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Prime Minister whether the Government's policy of increased salary payments being tied to productivity applies to Ministers and Chairmen of nationalised boards and, as large departments have been removed from the direct responsibility of the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, and as many coal mines have been closed and manpower reduced, if he will arrange to reduce the salaries of those concerned, especially when productivity falls.

§ The Prime MinisterThe Government's policy regarding salary revisions in the public services is set out in paragraphs 92–96 of the White Paper Cmnd. 4237. These paragraphs apply to Ministers and the chairmen of nationalised boards as to other categories, and in dealing with individual cases all relevant factors are taken into account. Productivity in the coal industry in 1969 was 4 per cent. higher than in 1968, 14 per cent. higher than in 1967 and 27 per cent. higher than in 1964.
