asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total value of former Civil Defence and Auxiliary Fire Service vehicles and other equipment taken into Home Office stores in 1968; what was the total value of such vehicles and other equipment since sold; what were the total proceeds of sale; what is the annual cost of maintaining in serviceable condition vehicles and other equipment remaining in Home Office stores; and what steps are taken to maintain them in serviceable condition.

The purchase price less depreciation of vehicles and equipment in Home Office Stores at the end of 1968 was £37.3 million. The purchase price less depreciation of vehicles and equipment disposed of to date was £2.1 million, the proceeds of sale being £0.5 million. The annual maintenance and storage costs of the equipment to be retained permanently is £0.9 million. The vehicles and equipment are being held in proper storage conditions and are subject to periodical inspection, maintenance and repair.
