HC Deb 05 February 1970 vol 795 c170W
58. Mr. Cronin

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will initiate a publicity campaign among older children of school age to prevent them commencing smoking, in view of the fact that cigarette smoking kills over 50,000 people a year and causes about 20 times more working days to be lost through sickness than are lost through industrial disputes.

Miss Bacon

The Health Education Council is preparing a campaign to persuade young people, including older school pupils, not to start smoking. I understand that it will start in about a month's time and will use the mass media as well as other publicity material.
