asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if she will make a statement about the unemployment position in Edinburgh.

Mr. Dell

On 12th January there were 4,377 persons, including 3,844 males, registered as unemployed at the Edinburgh Employment Exchange. The rate of unemployment in the travel-to-work area as a whole was 3.5 per cent. compared with 3.0 per cent. in December and 2.8 per cent. in January, 1969.

The Government are keeping the situation under close review with the Scottish Economic Planning Council.
