HC Deb 02 February 1970 vol 795 cc18-9W
76. Mr. Spriggs

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the rates of pay and conditions of service of the first, second and third year student nurse in the National Health Service.

Dr. John Dunwoody

The current training allowances for first, second and third year general student nurses under age 25 are £395, £450 and £480 respectively. In addition there is a special meals allowance of £48 per annum. The allowances are at present under review by the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council. I am sending my hon. Friend a copy of the Whitley Council Handbook which sets out the conditions of service.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will increase the pay of nurses with retrospective payments to 1967 by at least 35 per cent. overall.

Mr. Crossman

No. Negotiations are proceeding in the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council on the substantial offer made by the Management Side on 13th January.
