HC Deb 18 December 1970 vol 808 c463W
Mr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will list the primary schools at present in use in the Upper Agbrigg and Saddle-worth educational districts of the West Riding which were built before 1903, and the number she estimates will still be in use in five years time.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The list submitted to the Department by the West Riding local education authority of old primary schools requiring improvement or replacement includes the following schools built before 1903 in the Upper Agbrigg Division:

  • Denby Dale Clayton West Kayes Junior and Infant;
  • Denby Dale District Junior and Infant;
  • Holmfirth Wooldale Junior;
  • Kirkburton Flockton Junior and Infant;
  • Kirkburton Kirkheaton C.E. Junior and Infant;
  • Kirkburton Thurston Endowed Junior and Infant.

No schools in the Saddleworth county district are included in the Authority's list.

It is the Government's hope that the elimination of unsatisfactory 19th century primary schools will be in sight at the end of a five-year period, beginning with the recently announced programme for 1972–73. But how quickly individual schools can be replaced or improved will depend upon the local education authority's assessment of the relative priorities and on the resources available year by year.
