§ Mr. Laurance Reedasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will list the number of university departments offering a degree course in oceanography and marine biology, and also the number of departments awarding degree courses in ocean engineering.
§ Mr. van StraubenzeeI understand that oceanography forms part of first-degree courses at the Universities of East Anglia, Liverpool and Wales (Bangor and Swansea) and can be studied at postgraduate level at the Universities of Southampton and Wales (Bangor). Marine biology forms part of first-degree courses at the Universities of Belfast, East Anglia, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, London (Queen Mary's and Bedford Colleges), Newcastle, St. Andrews, Sheffield, Southampton and Wales (Bangor and Swansea) and can be studied at postgraduate level at the University of Wales (Bangor). There are no courses described as ocean engineering at United Kingdom universities.
