HC Deb 16 December 1970 vol 808 c358W
122. Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he now proposes to take in 1971–72 to reduce the pollution of streams and rivers.

Mr. Peter Walker

This is primarily the responsibility of the river authorities, but is dependent upon expenditure by local authorities, industry and others who discharge effluents to the rivers. For their part, the Government will permit a higher level of public capital investment in sewerage and sewage disposal than ever before, and will review it when the results of the River Pollution Survey are available.
