HC Deb 15 December 1970 vol 808 cc297-9W
Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for the Social Services how many persons, for the latest month for which full information is available, have had their entitlement to supplementary allowance curtailed on review after four weeks or three months in each of the Department's administrative regions, including Wales; and what percentage these figures represent both of the total population of each region and of the total unemployment rate for each region.

Mr. Dean

The precise information requested is not available. The numbers of limited awards made in the four weeks ending on 20th October, 1970, and the numbers curtailed on review after four weeks or three months are as follows:

Country or Region Limited awards issued Allowances curtailed on review at the end of period*

TOTAL 6,128 146
* Some men do not make further claims at the end of four weeks and, of these, some apply later for renewal of their allowances; no information is available about these applications.

Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many persons have so far had their entitlement to supplementary allowance terminated by each of the standard control procedures after four weeks, three months, six months and one year, respectively, in each of the Department's administrative regions, including Wales.

Mr. Dean

The precise information requested is not available, but the number of limited awards issued in each region since 14th October, 1968, is given in the table below:

Number of limited allowances given
Country or Region At the outset of claim After 3 months
Northern Nil Nil

* These figures include allowances which terminated before the end of the four week limit or were extended.
† These figures include allowances which were already in issue when the control was introduced, and which had been running for more than 3 months when limited.
Records are not kept for reviews at the end of six or 12 months and there is, in fact, no routine control procedure by way of four weeks' allowances at these stages.

Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of Secretary of State for Social Services how many persons, for each month since June, 1969, have had their entitlement to a supplementary allowance terminated as a result of the application of each of the standard control procedures after four weeks, three months, six months and one year, respectively; how many in each of these four categories have each month had their allowance extended; and how many in each category have appealed, and of these how many have been successful in their appeal.

Mr. Dean

The available information is given in the table below. As regards reviews at the end of six or twelve
