HC Deb 15 December 1970 vol 808 c299W
Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many men and women were sent to re-establishment centres in Great Britain for each of the last five years; what was the shortest, longest and average period of training given; and how many persons thus trained were still in regular employment, according to the latest survey, six months and two years, respectively, after completing the period of training.

Mr. Dean

There are no re-establishment centres for women. For men the average duration of stay is probably about eight weeks: other available information is given in the table below:

Year Admitted to centres* Discharged direct to employment
1965 936(13) 383
1966 970(13) 374
1967 1,675(18) 605
1968 2,215 (39) 840
1969 2,206(50) 897
* Most men volunteer for training. Figures in brackets show numbers whose benefit was made conditional on attendance at a centre.
† Other men are referred back for placing by their local employment exchanges.
