asked the Minister of State for Defence if he will now confirm that air crews of vertical take-off landing aircraft to be deployed with the fleet in the new command cruisers or other ships after the phasing out of H.M.S. "Ark Royal" will not be provided by the Royal Navy.

Trials at sea with the current version of the Harrier continue but no decision has been taken to deploy such aircraft at sea. The question which Service would operate them does not, therefore, yet arise.
