HC Deb 29 April 1970 vol 800 c350W
Mr. John Lee

asked the Attorney General (1) how many persons have been prosecuted to date for offences arising out of the illegal Declaration of Independence of Rhodesia other than offences in respect of breaches of sanctions;

(2) what is the total number of prosecutions, in respect of breaches of sanctions, that have been instituted since the illegal Declaration of Independence of Rhodesia; what is the total value of fines imposed; how many sentences of imprisonment have been imposed; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General:

According to the information available to me, prosecutions have been instituted in 12 cases. Some of these cases involved more than one accused person, and several of them involved more than one charge. Of these 12 cases, five were in connection with finance or exchange control matters, and seven were in connection with exports to Southern Rhodesia.

One of the 12 cases resulted in an acquittal; in two of them the proceedings are not yet completed. Fines imposed to date total £139,530. No sentences of imprisonment have been imposed.
