HC Deb 29 April 1970 vol 800 cc334-5W
Mr. Marks

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated number of retirement pensioners who pay tax on their National Insurance retirement pension.

Mr. Taverne:

It is estimated that for 1970–71, counting married couples as one, about 1.6 million National Insurance retirement pensioners will have sufficient income from other sources to make them liable to tax; if they had nothing but the National Insurance retirement pension they would have no tax to pay.
