Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Minister of Transport what is the mileage planned, and estimated total cost of road improvement schemes in Yorkshire and Humber-side, approved by him recently, and approved before this, but not started; and, of the total estimated cost, how much will be borne by the ratepayers and how much by the Exchequer.

Mr. Mulley:

Almost 26 miles of new and improved major road schemes in Yorkshire and Humberside were approved during the financial year 1969 –70. The estimated total cost is £34 million, of which the Exchequer will bear £32 million and local authority £2 million.

There are no schemes approved before this that have not started.

Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister of Transport how many miles of major road improvement schemes, started in 1969, will result in no additional lane for increasing traffic; and what was the total cost of such schemes.

Mr. Bob Brown

51 miles at a total cost of some £7 million.
