HC Deb 28 April 1970 vol 800 cc272-3W
77. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Transport (1) whether he will meet a deputation from the West Ham Trades Council, together with Members of Parliament for the London Borough of Newham, to discuss with them the problems of men and women in Greater London who have difficulty in getting to and from their work on exports, in view of the lack of adequate transport facilities, with a view to legislation to improve such facilities;

(2) whether, in view of the representations by the West Ham Trades Council on public transport, sent to him by the hon. Member for West Ham, North, he will seek to remove control of transport in the London area from the Greater London Council, and seek powers to assist workers in London to travel to and from work; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Bob Brown:

No. I see no reason for altering the statutory arrangements for the provision of public transport in London which were made recently. It would, therefore, be wrong for my right hon. Friend to intervene in questions of the level and quality of services for which responsibility lies elsewhere.
