HC Deb 28 April 1970 vol 800 cc287-8W
82. Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the number of income tax and surtax payers in each year since 1955, showing the yield of tax in each year.

Mr. Taverne

For the early years I would refer my hon. Friend to the figures published in Inland Revenue Statistics 1970, Tables 1 and 6. The other Estimates are as follows:

20,440,000 income tax payers for 1968–69; a revised estimate for 1969–70 will be available in about a month's time.

505,000 people liable to surtax for 1968–69 payable in 1969–70.

£4,910 million and £255 million net receipts of income tax and surtax respectively in 1969–70.

I would remind my hon. Friend that the income tax for the earlier years includes the amount paid by companies as well as the amount paid by individuals.
