asked Her Majesty's Government:

When recently agreed scales are implemented, what will be the salary scales of the following:

  1. (i) a hospital matron, ward sister, and staff nurse;
  2. (ii) an executive officer, Principal and Assistant Secretary in the Civil Service;
  3. (iii) a police constable, police inspector and senior inspector.

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (LORD SHACKLETON)

The scales, are:

(i) Hospital matron (from April 1, 1970).

There are a number of different scales:

General hospitals
(from) £ 2,394–£ 2,844
(to) £ l,572–£ l,902
Psychiatric hospitals
(from) £ 2,493–£ 2,943
(to) £ l,671–£ 2,001

(These scales apply to posts in the pre-Salmon structure only. The top scale for chief nursing officers of hos-pital groups is £ 3,102–£ 3,702.)

Ward sister (from April 1, 1970).

General hospitals £ l,200–£ l,554
Psychiatric hospitals £ 1,299–£ 1,653

Staff nurse (from April 1, 1970).

General hospitals £ 930–£ 1,182
Psychiatric hospitals £ l,029–£ l,281

Those working in London qualify for a London weighting addition of £ 90.

(ii) Assistant Secretary† (from July 1, 1969).

£ 4,045–£ 5,200.

Principal† (from April 1, 1970).

£ 2,820–£ 3,902.

Executive officer† (from April 1, 1970).

£ 741–£ 1,835.

† Those working in London qualify for London weighting additions of £ 125 per annum (Inner London) and £ 75 per annum (Outer London).

(iii) Chief Inspector† (from January 1, 1970).

Men:

Metropolitan Police Force £ 2,050–£ 2,185
City of London Police Force £ 2,350–£ 2,525

Women:

† All these police officers are provided also with either free housing or a rent allowance (except for women officers married to members of police forces).
