HC Deb 27 April 1970 vol 800 c252W
Mr. Fortescue

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what use his Department makes of the National Giro for regular payments of salaries and pensions, and for other puposes; and, in view of the under-used capacity of the Giro, whether he will consider using it more.

Mr. Merlyn Rees:

The facilities of the National Giro service have been brought to the notice of staff, and salaries are paid into Giro accounts wherever staff opt for this method of payment. Similar facilities will shortly be available to weekly paid staff. In addition, Giro orders are used for the payment of numbers of weekly paid staff and for certain payments to ex-prisoners. The Home Office is in consultation with the National Giro headquarters about the possibility of making further use of Giro.
