HC Deb 27 April 1970 vol 800 cc252-3W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prosecutions have taken place since the tyre regulations came into force; how many were dismissed; how many fines were imposed; and what was the average fine.

Mr. Elystan Morgan:

From 1st April, 1968, when the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations, 1967, came into operation, until 31st December, 1969, the latest date for which the figures are available, 59,805 cases of using, or permitting the use of, a motor vehicle fitted with defective tyres were dealt with in England and Wales by prosecution. In 1,870 of these cases the charge was dismissed or withdrawn, and in a further 55,987 a fine was imposed: the amount of the fines averaged £6 8s.
