HC Deb 27 April 1970 vol 800 cc195-6W
55. Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Minister of Technology if he will make proposals to protect the British coal industry on the United Kingdom joining the Common Market, in view of the fact that, under the common energy policy of the European Economic Community, decisions affecting the future of the industry will fall to be taken in Brussels and not in London.

Mr. Alan Williams:

The E.E.C. has not yet established a common energy policy though it is working towards one. As members we would play our full part in this process. I can see no reason to fear that our coal interests will be harmed but if my hon. Friend has any particular point in mind perhaps he would let me know.
