§ Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will prosecute G.K.N. Limited for its participation in the Cabora Bassa dam project in breach of sanctions legislation against Rhodesia.
§ Mr. Foley:If my hon. Friend has any information that any British company, whether in the course of its operations in Mozambique or otherwise, is acting in breach of sanctions, it would be appropriate for him to bring it to the notice of my right hon. and learned Friend the Attorney-General, who will give consideration to it.
So far as the Cabora Bassa project is concerned, it will be recalled that, as my right hon. and noble Friend the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Lord Shepherd) said in another place on 15th December last year, the mere supply of equipment to Mozambigue does not fall within the ambit of our sanctions legislation, although, given the location of the dam site, participation in the supply and installation of equipment at Cabora Bassa carries with it the risk of dealings in Rhodesian goods or with companies operating from Rhodesia, either of which could involve a breach of our sanctions legislation.
