HC Deb 24 April 1970 vol 800 cc179-80W
Mr. Hobden

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will show projected growth in population, numbers of housing completions and numbers of properties demolished by slum clearance, respectively, in each year for the next five years.

Mr. Freeson:

The Government Actuary's latest projections of the total population of England and Wales are:

1970 49,232,000
1971 49,528,000
1972 49,829,000
1973 50,136,000
1974 50,444,000
1975 50,751,000

It is not practicable to estimate the number of dwellings to be completed in individual years so far ahead. Local authorities have reported to the Minister recently that they intend to clear 94,000 slums this year and 91,000, 86,000 and 78,000 in the next three years. These compare with a yearly average of 61,000 in the years 1963 to 1965 and 70,000 in the years 1966 to 1969.
