asked the President of the Board of Trade what investigation he intends to carry out into the fire which broke out on the Manchester Ship Canal on 14th April causing serious injuries to people and ferryboats.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts:

As a first step, and in consultation with other Departments also concerned, I have ordered a preliminary inquiry under Section 465 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894. in order to establish the cause of the casualty. The inquiry is proceeding. Further action to be taken as a result of this inquiry will be decided in consultation with other Departments.
