Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of consultants working in National Health Service hospitals in England and Wales; and how many are on part-time contracts.

Mr. Crossman:

At 30th September, 1969, there were 9,431 consultants of whom 792—mainly university and Medical Research Council staff—were honorary. Of the 8,639 consultants paid from National Health Service funds, 5,475 were on part-time contracts.
