HC Deb 15 April 1970 vol 799 c234W
19. Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he now proposes to take to allow home producers to grow more sugar beet, in view of the fact that sugar production is increasing in efficiency.

Mr. Hoy

The sugar produced from the present beet acreage, together with what we are committed to buy from the Commonwealth, meets virtually all our requirements. With sugar consumption at best static and sugar beet yields rising, there is therefore no room in present circumstances for any increase in the beet acreage.
