HC Deb 14 April 1970 vol 799 c206W
Mr. Marten

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the gross national product per head of population in the European Economic Community compared with the European Free Trade Association and the United Kingdom at the latest convenient date, expressed in dollars, from information available from international sources.

Mr. William Rodgers

On the basis of data from the United Nations, the gross national product at market prices par head of population in 1968 was $2,050 for the European Economic Community, $1,930 for the European Free Trade Association (including the United Kingdom) and $1,860 for the United Kingdom. But conversion from national currencies to dollars at official exchange rates does not give a good indication of relative levels since it does not accurately reflect differences in the internal purchasing power of currencies.
