asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many primary classes in Southampton had more than 40 pupils in January, 1969; what percentage that was of the total; and what are the latest available figures.

In January, 1969, 62 primary classes in schools maintained by Southampton local education authority, 9.7 per cent. of the total, had more than 40 pupils. In January, 1970 the figures were 32, and 4.8 per cent.
