HC Deb 08 April 1970 vol 799 c88W
Mr. Eadie

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what investigation has been carried out under the auspices of his Department to ascertain the reason for earth tremors that took place in the vicinity of the Burgh of Bonnyrigg and Lasswade, Midlothian, during the month of March, 1970.

Mr. Fowler

The Institute of Geological sciences records seismological events at six stations linked by U.H.F. radio to the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. The Bonnyrigg tremor was recorded at two stations in Scotland on 27th March and showed a magnitude far below the level normally regarded as damaging. Minor seismological events are recorded several times a day and may be due to industrial explosions, natural earthquakes or mining subsidence. It is not always possible to distinguish the nature of any one event, and this was the case on 27th March.
