HC Deb 07 April 1970 vol 799 cc65-6W
Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many prisoners in Scottish prisons, and which prisons, have been transferred during each of the last five years from unskilled to skilled productive work of national utility and what was the nature of the training for, and the product of, the work in each case.

Mr. Ross

There is both skilled and unskilled work of national utility available in all prisons, and prisoners are selected and trained for the various tasks in accordance with their aptitudes. The total value of work done in Scottish penal establishments in the financial year 1968–69 was £638,352. Information about prisoners transferred from one class of work to another could not be collected without disproportionate cost.
