HC Deb 07 April 1970 vol 799 cc49-50W
Sir B. Janner

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he has now received the report of the National Board for Prices and Incomes on the plant bakers' proposal that the price of large loaves should be increased by 1d.; what is the board's finding; and what conclusion the Government have reached.

Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

In November and December, 1969, the major plant bakers applied under the early warning arrangements for an increase of 2d. in the price of the large loaf. The Government accepted an increase of 1d. but referred the further 1d. to the National Board for Prices and Incomes for examination.

The board is publishing its report today. Its conclusion, after examining the financial position of the industry, is that the proposed further increase of a penny in the recommended retail price of large loaves should now be approved. The board's conclusion is based on the view that the increase is required in order not to prejudice investment essential for efficient bread production. The Government accept the board's conclusion, and I have so informed the major plant bakers. The increased prices will take effect from Monday, 20th April. The price of small loaves sold by these bakers is not affected.
