59. Mr. Goodhart

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many transport aircraft sorties are required to lift the British Army and Royal Air Force ground personnel and their equipment from the United Kingdom to Malaysia/Singapore for exercise Bersatu Padu.

Mr. Hattersley

A total of about 85 transport aircraft sorties will be needed for the main Army airlift which comprises equipment—including vehicles and helicopters—as well as personnel. Some 40 sorties will be needed for the equivalent Royal Air Force element.

60. Mr. Goodhart

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what types and how many of each type of combat aircraft normally based in the Far East are taking part in exercise Bersatu Padu; and what types and how many of each type will be deployed from the United Kingdom for the exercise.

One squadron of Lightnings and two Shackleton aircraft normally based in the Far East are taking part in exercise Bersatu Padu; Royal Air Force aircraft deploying from the United Kingdom for the exercise will consist of a squadron of Phantoms, 3 Canberra photographic reconnaissance aircraft and 6 Vulcans.
