HC Deb 21 October 1969 vol 788 c193W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service why the allowance of 53s. for candidates who come to London for interview for Civil Service situations and have to stay overnight has been increased to 61s. 6d. per night; and what is the normal rate for a higher-paid civil servant who stays overnight whilst on duty in London.

Mr. Shore

The candidate's overnight allowance was increased because it is derived from the 24-hours rates of subsistence for the Civil Service which were revised to take account of higher hotel charges. The normal rate for higher-paid civil servants visiting London is 88s.; for Assistant Secretaries and above it is 104s.
