HL Deb 15 October 1969 vol 304 cc1535-6WA
Lord ERROLL of HALE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many coin collectors have been registered as numismatists in order that they may retain four or more gold coins in their collections; and whether Her Majesty's Government will publish a list of those so registered, or make the register available for public scrutiny.

Lord BESWICK

Six thousand, one hundred and ninety-nine persons had been given permission by the Bank of England to add gold coins minted after 1837 to their existing coin collections up to the end of September, 1969 (four post-1837 gold coins may be held without specific permission if they were held on April 26, 1966). It is not intended to publish a list of such persons because it would put into the hands of thieves a guide to people holding valuable collections of coin, and might expose them to unwelcome approaches from commercial interests.
