§ Mr. Hugh Jenkinsasked the President of the Board of Trade (1) in view of the fact that the United States Government have announced a total ban on supersonic overflying until the problem of the sonic 94W boom has been solved, it Her Majesty's Government will impose a similar ban in respect of the United Kingdom; what estimate he has made of the effects of the general adoption of such bans upon the financial viability of Concorde; and if Her Majesty's Government will now abandon this project;
(2) whether, in the aircraft noise regulations he proposes to lay before the House in the new year, he will provide for the total prohibition of supersonic flying over land by civil aircraft.
§ Mr. Goronwy RobertsHer Majesty's Government have not yet decided on restrictions to be imposed on supersonic flights over the United Kingdom. I understand that the manufacturers' sales forecasts for Concorde have always allowed for the possibility that supersonic flight over land might be prohibited.
