HC Deb 26 November 1969 vol 792 cc93-4W
Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) in view of the fact that the United States Government have announced a total ban on supersonic overflying until the problem of the sonic boom has been solved, it Her Majesty's Government will impose a similar ban in respect of the United Kingdom; what estimate he has made of the effects of the general adoption of such bans upon the financial viability of Concorde; and if Her Majesty's Government will now abandon this project;

(2) whether, in the aircraft noise regulations he proposes to lay before the House in the new year, he will provide for the total prohibition of supersonic flying over land by civil aircraft.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

Her Majesty's Government have not yet decided on restrictions to be imposed on supersonic flights over the United Kingdom. I understand that the manufacturers' sales forecasts for Concorde have always allowed for the possibility that supersonic flight over land might be prohibited.
