HC Deb 03 November 1969 vol 790 cc52-3W
Mr. David Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will take steps to amend the quarantine regulations so as to provide a suitable extension of quarantine for all dogs which are in a quarantine kennels at the time at which another animal therein has rabies.

Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

I would refer the hon. Member to the statement I made on 29th October. I am reviewing our safeguards against the introduction of rabies into this country.—[Vol. 790, c. 159–62.]1

Mr. David Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether steps have been taken to re-quarantine all dogs and other pets which came in contact with the dog which died of rabies while in the quarantine kennels from which the Camberley dog had come; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

No. In view of the inquiries already made, to which I referred in my statement of 29th October, I am not satisfied that re-quarantining would be justified. Immediately this case of rabies was confirmed, steps were taken to arrange special surveillance of other dogs released from the quarantine premises concerned during the relevant period. These arrangements are continuing as a further precaution.
