HC Deb 04 March 1969 vol 779 cc71-2W
83. Sir H. d'Avigdor-Goldsmid

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what extent the inspectors of taxes, the Stamp Office and the Estate Duty Office are in arrear with their work.

Mr. Harold Lever

Pressure of work in local tax offices continues to be severe, but thanks to the co-operation of the staff, arrears have been contained within manageable bounds. The offices of the Comptroller of Stamps and Director of Stamping are not in arrear with their work, and, although the volume of work in the Estate Duty Office was greater in 1968 than in previous years, the majority of Estates are settled within two months of the grant of probate.
