asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many crimes involving the use of firearms were known to the police in 1964 and in each subsequent year; how many of these crimes involved wounding by shooting in each year; and how many involved killing by shooting in each year.

The numbers of indictable offences involving firearms known to the police in England and Wales from 1964 are as follows: 1964, 731; 1965, 1,140; 1966, 1,511; 1967, 2,337; 1968, 2,500. The number of these offences in which firearms were used of presented was 791 in 1967. Of these 351 involved wounding by shooting, and a further 45 involved killing by shooting. The corresponding figures for 1968 were 875, 352 and 40, respectively.
