HC Deb 24 June 1969 vol 785 cc257-8W
Mr. Edward M. Taylor

asked the Postmaster-General how many tons of wastepaper were sold by the Post Office in the most recent annual period for which figures are available; and what steps are taken to ensure that no mail is disposed of with this wastepaper.

Mr. Stonehouse

Local managers are responsible for disposing of wastepaper and no central record is kept of the quantity sold. Wastepaper is conveyed in special sacks and standing instructions provide for it to be examined carefully before disposal to ensure that no mail or article of value is included. Despite these precautions I regret that there are occasional failures.
