HC Deb 25 July 1969 vol 787 cc510-1W
Mr. Hornby

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will take steps to ensure that those teachers whose only qualification is the Licentiate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry will be able to continue to teach following the implementation of Circular 15/68 on 31st August, 1970.

Miss Bacon

No. All unqualified teachers will be treated in the same way. After 31st August, 1970, they may be employed only as instructors—or student teachers.

Mr. Hornby

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many teachers in maintained schools are qualified to teach solely by their possession of the Licentiate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry.

Miss Bacon

None. The Licentiate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry has never been recognised as giving entitlement to qualified teacher status. There may be holders of this qualification in service as unqualified teachers, but I do not know how many.
