HC Deb 25 July 1969 vol 787 c551W
Mr. Richard

asked the Minister of Overseas Development if he will continue to provide financial assistance to the Kenya Government to enable certain British farmers to be bought out on compassionate grounds.

Mr. Prentice

My predecessor announced in the House on 16th November, 1965 that during the four-year period beginning in April, 1966 she was prepared to provide a limited sum to the Kenya Government for this purpose, and since then some £235,000 has been made available. In the past two years or more, however, no eligible cases have arisen, from which it would seem that, as my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary said in the House on 28th July, 1967,this scheme must now be regarded as having very largely fulfilled its original purpose". So that there may be no misunderstanding, I think it right therefore to give advance notice now that on expiry of the current four-year period, i.e. after March, 1970, I do not propose to give any further financial assistance for cases of this sort.—[Vol. 720, c. 48; Vol. 751, c. 1197.]
