HC Deb 25 July 1969 vol 787 cc605-6W
Sir B. Janner

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it is intended that the Decimal Currency Board should continue to give guidance about the adaptation of retail prices after the new decimal currency becomes effective; and what steps are now being taken by his Department to ensure that there is no inflationary effect consequent upon the changeover.

Mr. Taverne

I would expect the Decimal Currency Board to give guidance on this and other matters connected with the introduction of decimal currency as necessary until the end of the change-over period. Decimalisation need lead to no overall increase in price levels if those responsible follow the advice on the general approach to the conversion of prices which the Decimal Currency Board and the Government have issued.
