HC Deb 25 July 1969 vol 787 c606W
Sir B. Janner

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what advice is being given to retailers after the ½d. piece ceases to be legal tender to ensure that the prices charged to the public are consistent with the prices and incomes policy.

Mr. Taverne

In a letter sent to retail and transport associations on the 31st March the Decimal Currency Board asked that those responsible for the prices of goods and services should phase out halfpennies gradually so that they no longer appear in prices by the end of July at the latest and pointed out that it would not be appropriate to round up prices in every case. Advice on the general approach to the conversion of prices to decimal currency amounts has been issued by the Decimal Currency Board and the Government; any adjustments meanwhile must depend on the circumstances of each case.
