HC Deb 24 July 1969 vol 787 cc466-7W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has for encouraging the observance in the United Kingdom of the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations next year.

Mr. Foley

Her Majesty's Government believe that the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations should be an occasion for extending public understanding—especially among young people—of the organisation and what it stands for. To this end, I have decided to appoint a National Co-ordinating Committee under the Chairmanship of Sir Harold Beeley. I am delighted to say that his Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has consented to be Patron of the committee, and the leaders of the three main political parties have agreed to be sponsors. The following is the membership of the committee so far; it is hoped, however, that one or two names will be added later:

Chairman

Sir Harold Beeley, K.C.M.G.

Vice-Chairman

  • Mr. Humphry Berkeley;
  • The Rt. Hn. George Darling, M.P.;
  • The Lady Gaitskell.
