HC Deb 24 July 1969 vol 787 c420W
46. Mr. Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in view of the fact that the recent official report by the Chief Inspector of Constabulary shows that crime outside London increased by 8.5 per cent. last year, what action he proposes to take to deal with the situation.

Mr. Callaghan

The police have been assisted by new legislative measures; by the introduction of new methods of policing; by new equipment—including, over the past four years, 5,000 vehicles and 20,000 pocket radios; and by growing strength of numbers which will, I hope, reach 93,600 by 31st March, 1970.
