HC Deb 26 February 1969 vol 778 c307W
Mrs. Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the Government's policy on the establishment of a National Theatre in Scotland.

Mr. Ross

There are no proposals for the establishment of a National Theatre in Scotland before me at present. At the present time the most appropriate way of encouraging professional drama in Scotland is by continuing Government assistance to the existing repertory theatres, and the Scottish Arts Council's grants for the repertory theatres and associated dramatic activities increased from £81,500 in1965–66 to over £228,000 in 1967–68.
