HC Deb 17 February 1969 vol 778 cc1-2W
17. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will give an assurance that every facility will be given by Her Majesty's Government for the development of the seaweed industry in the Falkland Islands.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

As my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State told the hon. Member for Chigwell (Mr. Biggs-Davison) on 24th January, Alginate Industries Limited are sending out a representative to the Islands in April or May this year for discussions with the Governor. I should prefer to await the outcome of this visit.—[Col. 757, Vol. 776.]

43. Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the approximate per capita contribution made by citizens of the Falkland Islands to the defence of those islands; and how this compares with the per capita contribution to the defence budget by citizens of the United Kingdom.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

The Falkland Islands Government meet the full cost of the local Volunteer Defence Force, a contribution this year of just under £2 per head of the population. This compares with a contribution to the Defence Budget by citizens of the United Kingdom of approximately £40 10s. 0d. per head in the financial year 1967/68 and of approximately £41 in 1968/69.
