HC Deb 17 February 1969 vol 778 c20W
85. Mr. H. Boardman

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if she will state the reasons for the increase in the numbers employed in her Department from 21,300 on 1st April, 1964, to 29,200 on 1st October, 1968.

Mr. Hattersley

Part of the increase in staff numbers between 1st April, 1964, and 1st October, 1968, was occasioned by work arising from new legislation including the Redundancy Payments Act, 1964, the Industrial Training Act, 1964, the Selective Employment Payments Act, 1966, and the National Insurance Act, 1966. In addition, local office staffs, the Manpower and Productivity Service, H.M. Factory Inspectorate and Government Training Centres have been considerably expanded for essential work of economic and social importance.
